Leveraging technology to extend the scope and reach of mental health care - Jonathan Comer, Ph.D.
Learning Objectives:
1. Describe how technologies are being leveraged to overcome systematic barriers to quality mental health care.
2. Describe how technologies can be leveraged to expand the ecological validity of care.
3. List multiple current barriers that hinder the broad reach and accessibility of technology-based treatments.
Dr. Comer (he/him/his) is Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, and is director of the Mental Health Interventions and Technology (MINT) Program, an interdisciplinary clinical research laboratory devoted to expanding the quality, scope and accessibility of mental health care for youth. His program of research examines four areas of overlapping inquiry: (1) The assessment, phenomenology, and course of child anxiety disorders; (2) the development and evaluation of evidence-based treatments for childhood psychopathology, with particular focus on the development of innovative methods to reduce systematic barriers to effective mental health care in the community; (3) national patterns and trends in the utilization of mental health services and quality of care; and (4) the psychological impact of disasters and terrorism on youth.

    One huge issue are horrible therapists. The better ones don’t take our insurance. We’ve experienced terrible therapists and when it’s the school therapist running the show they never want to blame the school situation like bullies. Kids today have to deal with massive bullying with social media that we didn’t have when we were kids. When a kid fears the school and then any place a kid from school might end up the world becomes smaller and smaller. How about schools crack down on the source of the anxiety “the bullies”. Make school a safe place with better school therapists. Parents are doing everything they can out here it’s insulting that the schools always want to place the blame on parents. By the way schools have over crowded and classroom sizes have increased and that doesn’t help. I’ve tried giving a therapist a topic to discuss to find out they talked of nothing on that topic.

    My kid won’t go at all and he’s 8. He’s gone like 4 times in 6 weeks and always has a good day but fights me every day. I bring him here and I’ve gotten him as far as the school lobby but today he freaked out and ran out the door when the social worker tried to get him to come in to class. We just sit in the parking lot or in the doorway for hours a day. Im losing work time, house chores, we have no socializing because of how “troubled” people think this is. Therapists can’t figure it out. They all give up on him. My husband died last year and this has been hard on both of us, but he’s making it worse with this behavior.

    I am a teacher and had my first case of SM about 12 years ago. In recent years I’ve seen these cases more and more. I currently have 3 girls that have a high level of social anxiety in my classroom. Two speak barely and very quietly and get easily scared of changes on routine or caregivers. I have one case who doesn’t speak at all. I wonder what is causing this increase in anxiety in children. Has other schools seeing this as well.

      Their world has become scarier-shootings, natural disasters, and other horrific images available at a glance on the screens all around today’s children. At the same time, they have more precarious home and family environments; so many split families and very few households with an adult who’s main priority is their children. Personally, I have been very involved at my kids’ schools and have seen and felt a significant difference in the school environment between my oldest and youngest kids, less than 10 years age span.

    the environment should be clam and quite so that the kid is not overwhelmed. So many therapist talking and laughing makes it difficult for the little one to concentrate.

    This really traumatised me listening to these strategies 😢 I’ve a child out of education for 4/5 years now. 11 failed placements. He’s 16 now and the trauma the “system “ has caused is heartbreaking. Some kids just CANT fit into THE SYSTEM and to punish them in the ways you’ve described causes more trauma.

    Wrong, anxiety attacks can last longer. How many people have walked into the hospital thinking they are having a heart attack? Something’s I agree with but some things she’s grown too hard towards kids with anxiety. I know adults who cannot drive over a bridge so they never do it, yet we expect kids to be able to get their blank together and just tell themselves it’s not okay to have fears they cannot always comprehend the illness fully. There has to be a better way, when she was going to school were there this many school shootings? Did she miss a year of in person school during Covid. These kids are struggling something within the schools has to change how they approach all kids.

  • @roserand639
    @roserand639 Рік тому

    This lady is speaking as if parents like myself can stay home or tell my boss I’m bringing my kid to my job. This is ludicrous if the mental aspect is not heavily addressed nothing will really change. How can we get our kids tested for a disability to assess for a learning disability. I’m in New York Long Island. I’m not rich and cannot pay someone to stay home to make sure my kid is sitting at a table doing school work. This is not how to fix this. Some kids are not only anxious but stubborn as well. I parent can yell scream threaten take away everything and child still resists than what does the parent do, I’m sick of it all falling on me I’m doing what I know I need to do, the school should meet us half way send a tutor while child is attending therapy. Instead it’s thrown back on the parent for not being able to get their child to school, she is making it sound as if a parent just says whatever come on the parent is doing what they can! This is becoming more common no matter the age what is wrong with the system of schooling that is causing our kids to become anxious.

    School is obsolete. 6 hours of useless subjects u never use. Kids must find their passion first. Facts, figures are not it. I knew I was an actor but teachers insisted I forget it as other subjects were more important. I refused and was homeschooled. Met acting teacher and made my dream.

  • @charleswest6372

    Therapist isn't needed. Kids need to stay home if they don't feel safe at school. I refused school at 12. Too many jerks. Plus useless subjects that are forced into heads for "good grades". How stupid can u get? Shut down schools and get kids on their passion and purpose in life.

  • @charleswest6372
    @charleswest6372 Рік тому

    Let kids have the choice of going to school or homeschooling. If a kid feels unsafe in school they have a right to refuse going. Leave them be-! Schools are obsolete anyway. 6 hours of garbage u never use anyway.

    Why are they forcing this child to sit for long periods of time? He's a toddler!! He wants to explore and play without being forced to sit in one spot. He wanted to get up and play with the toys without being restrained on his mom's lap. How can he properly play with the blocks and all the toys in front of him if he can't even move off his mom's lap??? This is just weird. She keeps saying, "do you want a hug? Hmm? Do you want a hug?" No, he doesn't want a hug, he clearly wants you to stop restraining him on your lap! He wants to get up so he can play with the blocks! Same with the beginning of the video -- bringing in a whole table full of toys, and forcing him to sit on his mother's leg on the other end of the table and not letting him get up to go play with the toys. He's a toddler...........of course he's going to be "dysregulated" if you put toys in front of him and force him against his will to stay on your lap and not play with them!
